I WAS THINKING/AND THEN I WASN’T THINKING”.

Don't Miss the Party!
At Udstillingsstedet Sydhavn Station, Anne Langgaard has created a scenery for a party, but upon entering the exhibition space, you quickly realize that it's a party that's fading away.
You are greeted by a work consisting of a massive sculpture of 666 kilos of salt sticks - the cheap party snack no one really wants, but everyone mindlessly consumes. The salt sticks form a sliding pile throughout the exhibition space, with scattered works around - including an ordinary plastic chair cast in bronze, 1001 pickup lines written on A4 paper and crumpled, a pair of pineapple party glasses, a bunch of cheap roses from Netto cast in bronze, a bag-in-box in ceramics, and deflated balloons in bronze. These are sculptural transformations of the everyday, where the works contextualize a setting for a party that has been abandoned, the air has literally gone out of the balloon. It's a party from the end of the spectrum where people eagerly shop at discount stores. Here, there is an equal mix of the mundane and the divine - the ordinary and banal objects are transformed into sculptural explorations that emphasize and highlight the poetry and magic of everyday life.
Within the party lies both potential euphoria and potential disappointment. Something that can be fantastic or can go wrong. Langgaard invites you to a party that's already over before you arrive, and it's the "remnants" of the party that take center stage and are elevated to something universal through humorous and sculptural investigations of the everyday. There is also an implicit darkness in the tired traces that are left behind, something has ended, and maybe you didn't quite seize the moment but just sat there eating salt sticks. Langgaard's works can thus be seen as an attempt to hold on to the passing moment to eternalize it. This stems from a deep desire to prolong the present to postpone the inevitable: the loss of eternity.
In the poster frise in the foyer, you encounter the lyrics of selected songs by visual artist Martin Creed. Creed's fantastic universe sets the tone for the exhibition: he is a poet of the everyday, and in his lyrics, the mundane blends with the existential, "I WAS THINKING/AND THEN I WASN'T THINKING." His works are often playful and simple, yet deeply philosophical and conceptual. The exhibition in the gallery space with salt sticks, castings, and modeling of everyday life engages in a conversation with Creed's lyrics and the humor in the mundane. Langgaard has generously obtained permission to display the lyrics, and on the posters, there is a QR code that leads to the song on YouTube. This brings Creed's songs to life and can accompany the visitor on their journey through everyday life.
Anne Langgaard studied BA Fine Art (Hons) at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London (2011-13) and lives and works in Copenhagen. She is committed to bringing art into contexts other than the traditional "white cube" and has worked on this through the curatorial duo Walther&Langgaard (2016-2019) and now at the Exhibition Venue Sydhavn Station. As an artist, she is fascinated by the poetic and magical potential of everyday life, and she has ongoing exhibitions in Denmark and abroad. Her practice is an exploratory flirtation with everyday life and revolves around the aesthetic and sculptural qualities of everyday materials. She is interested in the entirely ordinary objects we take for granted and usually don't give a second thought.
Martin Creed is a British Turner Prize-winning artist known for his conceptual and minimalist approach to art. Martin Creed incorporates everyday objects into his works and has worked in various media, including painting, drawing, film, and music. Creed's musical style is often described as minimalist and experimental.
